They tend to have a width range between 66.09-95.5 inches. The depth of L-shaped desks has an average range between 18.89 – 29.3 inches. The below table shows some popular L-shaped corner desk dimensions sorted based on smallest to largest desk surface area.

Note that when you get the dimensions from a website, merely multiplying depth by width won’t give you the true work surface area of L-shaped desks.

Fortunately for you, I went to the effort of calculating it so you can know what desk surface area you can expect to have!

Also bear in mind that if there is a curved corner on the back of the L-shaped desk, it will mean that there is slightly less surface area available.

Does a corner desk save space?

A corner desk can maximize unused corner space to allow for storage and desk activities. Since corner desks have the option of shelving and a hutch, these allow for storage at a height as opposed to consuming floor space.

The fact that corner desks are often positioned against a wall makes for more space efficiency compared to a desk sitting in the center of a room.

Are corner desks good for small spaces?

Corner desks are ideal for small spaces, especially triangular shaped corner desks as they are more compact than L-shaped desks. Both options make use of unused corner space. Additionally, they can provide efficient storage space which runs up the wall by means of a hutch or shelving. L-shaped desk are essentially a larger version of a corner desk. Therefore, if space permits, an L-shaped desk could also be a choice, especially if you require a larger work surface.

I have previously written on how the size of a corner desk will also affect how much corner desks weigh as well as how much a good quality corner desk costs.

How wide should a corner desk be?

The width of a corner desk should be at least 24 inches wide. A desk of this size will allow for limited activities, such as using a laptop, keyboard and mouse.

Therefore, if you can afford more space or require more space, it would be wise to opt for a desk with at least 30 – 35 inches of desk depth.

Tip: People who use computer monitors usually require more depth to fit them.

How long is an L-shaped desk?

L-shaped desks measure on average between 66.09 to 95.5 inches in length. This includes both the desks length combined. This should be ample space for normal activities as most people can work from a desk measuring around 48 inches.

If you’re read through some of my previous posts, you might recall that I went through the exercise of measuring how little desk space I could work from.

If you didn’t see that (tut tut), let me bring you through it briefly here:

For laptop activities, I need a minimum depth of 18 inches to fit my 15.6 inch laptop while having enough space to type. If you can get a deeper desk, then do!

I measured out the minimum depth that I require to be able to fit my laptop (15.6 inch) and Logitech MK710 keyboard with wrist rest (9.5 inches wide).

To fit a laptop and keyboard, allow for a desk with a depth of at least 22 inches and a width of 30 inches.

A desk that’s 30 inches wide allowed me to fit a water bottle, keyboard and mouse with some space for manoeuvring the mouse around.

But if I had a choice, I would opt for a desk with at least 40 inches of width.

Tip: Lay all your items out on a desk and measure the dimensions so you can calculate how much space that you need.

How deep should an L-shaped desk be?

An L-shaped desk, or any desk for that matter, should be about 20 – 30 inches deep. This will allow you space to fit monitors, laptop, keyboard and mouse comfortably.

Generally, this won’t be a problem with most L-shaped desks. The desk with the smallest depth on this list measures 18.89 inches, which is just shy of the recommended depth.

Triangular corner desks on the other hand have a larger depth ranging from around 27.5 – 29.5 inches. But then you are short sized on the length of the corner desk when compared with L-shaped desks.

Conclusion

The size of the corner desk or L-shaped is a key component that everyone should take the time to evaluate. This is even more imperative if you have a small space to fit the corner desk or if you require a large desk area to complete your tasks.

L-shaped desks offer the most work surface space followed by triangular shaped desks. However, for compact spaces, triangular-shaped corner desks are generally the best choice.

Choosing a corner desk that’s too large might mean it won’t fit properly in the room.

Always choose a corner desk in a larger size than you need. But make sure to measure the space!
