Ergotron WorkFit-S single LD sit-stand workstation review

Did you know? Sitting and standing for long durations
are both bad habits for your health and well-being. A good routine is to adjust your posture every 30 minutes.

Product Overview

The Ergotron WorkFit-S single LD sit-stand workstation features in the desk-mounted category of standing desk converters. This desk converter features a vertical base that tilts away from you. It is mounted to an existing desk by means of a front clamp or grommet mount.

It features a post with a separate keyboard arm so that you can control both the keyboard and monitor independently of each other. It is a quality invention that is fabricated and engineered to a professional grade with a sleek black finish.

Modifying the position of this standing desk converter is also effortless, and it moves in a smooth and quick manner due to the counterbalance feature. This product is also a contender for possessing the greatest number of accessories available to customise and enhance your user experience. Choice is always an attractive feature.

The Ergotron WorkFit-S single LD sit-stand workstation is accommodating to a wide range of heights, and it is an excellent option for both short and tall people alike. The efficient and stable design of the unit makes it an ideal candidate for anybody looking to convert their current work space into a sit stand desk.

Assembly

There is an element of assembly required with this unit. Fortunately, there are step-by-step instructions provided to assist you along the way. Unfortunately, Ergotron don’t have an installation video to accompany the printed instructions.

From researching customer reviews on the product, one concern that a few people experienced with the product has been the complex instructions. Most people who have done similar flat pack installations before suggest that the installation isn’t too cumbersome though. Judging by some review videos, it seems to be straight-forward to install and setup.

Some elements that you should consider before beginning…

While the unit isn’t very heavy, it would be advisable to have a second person available for the section where you mount it onto the desk. This will take away the burden of trying to juggle stabilizing the unit while screwing it in place.

There are a set of tools required for installing the item that you’ll need to have, including:

  1. Phillips screwdriver
  2. Socket wrench (14mm)

Reviewers suggest that assembling this unit has taken anywhere from under 60 minutes to 90 minutes. Fine-tuning the tension and adjusting the settings to your personal preference is probably the section that will consume most time, especially if you are rather particular about how the unit is set up.

But remember, do it right and you’ll only have to do it once!

Once the unit is assembled and you are confident that it is firmly secured to the table, the cables can be looped through the tidy cable control system. All that’s left then is to place your equipment on the unit and try your new toy out.

Tip: Ensure the region that you position the unit has sufficient clearance to adjust between varying positions without encountering item or walls in the vicinity.

Height Range

There are not many standing desk converters that are suited to both short and tall people alike. Fortunately, this product is tailored to both. The height range of the standing desk is 58.4 cm / 23 inches vertically, which should be adequate for most heights. The drop-down keyboard is ideal for petite people and allows them to ergonomically reach the keyboard and see the screen.

In addition, this unit also suits taller people and can accommodate heights of 6’1″ / 185 cm. For individuals who are slightly taller or think that they would benefit from the extra height, there are monitor adapter plate accessories available; these extend the height of the monitor by an extra 6 inches.

Wait, explain the drop down keyboard benefits again?

So, the separate drop down keyboard tray is designed in such a way that it can be operated below normal desk height. Generally, with the majority of keyboards, they are placed at table height which is often far too high for the average person. It often results in people having to either raise the height of their chair so that they can achieve a 90-degree elbow angle while typing. Alternatively, their wrist and arms are bent upwards in an effort to reach the keyboard.

A benefit of this feature is that if your desk is too high, you can maintain a comfortable and ergonomic posture without having to alter the height of your chair. It’s also particularly valuable if you don’t have a height-adjustable chair.

Alternating between sitting and standing positions is child’s play. There are no hand levers, cranking or locking mechanisms. Basically, grab a hold of the keyboard tray and embrace the smooth and silent gliding motion until you reach to your desired position. One hands or two hands, it’s that easy!

Tip: The top of the monitor should always be in line with your eyes, regardless of whether you’re sitting or standing. This will avoid deviating your posture.

Compact Design

The efficient design of this standing desk converter is an excellent attribute which enables the unit to be located in compact spaces, including some corner desks. If the lack of a work surface is a deal breaker for you, breathe a sigh of relief as there is the option of purchasing a WorkFit-S with a work surface.

But what if you have already purchased a WorkFit-S without a work surface?

Well, rest easy as this is one of the many accessories that you can purchase and retrospectively install for some added comfort – phew! The options don’t stop there either; if a work surface isn’t something you’re after, then a tablet/document holder attachment is also available.

Footprint consumption is minimal too…

The desk clamp can attach to the front of a table edge ranging from 0.47 to 2.4 inches / 1.2 cm to 6 cm thick. The front clamp is particularly beneficial for those who have limited space at the back of their desk. However, bear in mind that it will be more difficult to access the back of the desk.

The keyboard and mouse tray are the only components that extends beyond the length of the desk (13.6 inches / 34.5cm). Fortunately, these can be folded upwards at a 90-degree angle when not in use.

Tip: Compare the dimensions and features of your desk with those of the desk converter before settling on the table you plan to attach it to. If there is a support bar or unusual finish on the desk, you may need to cut your desk to enable the product to clamp to it.

Monitors

The slanted design of the post that holds the monitor ensures that you are not too close to the monitor when sitting or standing, and thus, minimizes the chances of you leaning inwards or away from the screen and deviating your posture.

Monitor wobble issues should be non-existent as the monitor is attached to a sturdy post to offer a high level of overall stability. This desk converter offers you the ability to hold a single monitor up to 27 inches. If you are interested in upgrading to 2 monitors, I’ll share a link to the WorkFit-S dual further on in the article.

The range of motion available with the monitor is nothing to be sneeze at. You firstly have the independent monitor adjustment, which is terrific in terms of ergonomics. Essentially, it means that the height of the keyboard and monitor can be adjusted independently of each other for added comfort and enhanced posture.

You also have the freedom of 360 degrees monitor rotation. Picture being able to rotate your monitor in portrait and landscape mode. Finally, there’s also a 30-degree tilt function available too. The only motion that is lacking is pan mode.

The ability to rotate, lower and raise the monitors should be more than satisfactory at enabling you to achieve an optimal posture and greater levels of comfort than a regular desk could ever provide.

Tip: The stability of the sit stand desk converter goes in tandem with the desk stability. If there is any bounce or wobble on the table, it will be transferred to the desk converter, so be considerate with the desk you choose!

Keyboard

The keyboard surface offers 16.5 x 7.9 inches / 41.9 x 20.1 cm of area. It is angled with a 5-degree negative back-tilt to promote a neutral wrist position. This is also suggested to enhance both comfort and productivity while you type! In addition, it features a 90 degree upward folding option, which is a convenient space-saving feature.

There are also an extraordinary 9 different mounting positions for the keyboard, which should be more than sufficient to cater to the needs of even the hardest to please. This product receives brownie points for the unique dropped keyboard which can sit below your existing desk – a rare find which is beneficial, particularly if your desk is too tall.

In terms of keyboard adjustability, it can be positioned in an infinite number of locking positions, so you are not inhibited by a prespecified set of positions, like some other desk converter have.

Having the flexibility to adjust both the monitor and keyboard 5 inches / 13cm independently of each other is rare and considered gold-standard in terms of ergonomics.

There are only 2 possible concerns that could exist with the keyboard. Firstly, the slight bounce that reviewers claim to experience when typing. It could be attributed to the plastic keyboard material. This might only pose an issue if you are an aggressive typist though.

Secondly, the size of the keyboard tray is a touch on the compact side, which may be a gripe for some users, especially those with a full-size keyboard. Fortunately, there is a keyboard upgrade that you can invest in, which is not only larger, but it’s also made of a thicker material. This superior accessory may also mitigate the potential bounce issue.

Mouse

The mouse tray is a separate side space attached to the keyboard tray and offers a 7.5 x 7.9 inches / 19.1 x 20.1 cm of space. The mouse tray simply slides in and out from the left or right side of the keyboard tray. So left-handed people, you can rest easy knowing this isn’t an issue.

Cable Management

The cable control system ensures that you can raise and lower the unit without worrying about cables becoming entangled or pinched. All the necessary cables can be looped neatly through the vertical post; these are secured in place with the cable ties and a cable sleeve supplied by Ergotron.

Tip: Ensure that you allow adequate slack for the cables to have full range of motion when the desk converter is being adjusted.

Verdict

The Ergotron WorkFit-S single LD sit-stand workstation is a simple, yet effective product, that also offers ample features to ensure optimal ergonomics, comfort and dependability.

The infinite number of positions that the keyboard can be positioned in along with the admirable range of motion that can be achieved with the monitor are impressive features that not many products possess.

Furthermore, there are a limited range of products that accommodate both short and tall people, but this unit is one of a very exclusive club that offers this feature. The drop down keyboard is particularly suitable for shorter people; finding a standing desk converter with this type of keyboard will be a challenge.

The sizeable height range of this monitor makes it an ideal product for anyone, and tall people need not worry either. The cable management system is also an invaluable asset to keep cable clutter at bay. The ability to rotate the monitors 360 degrees is particularly impressive feature, and even to have the choice of portrait and landscape orientation is a nifty feature.

Below are some of the search criteria that I take into consideration for grading standing desk converters:

  • Being able to lean on or write on the unit without it swaying or toppling over.
  • Having adequate space when typing or using the unit.
  • Ensuring that the keyboard or other components do not push me away from the monitor.
  • Ensuring the unit can reach the necessary heights so I do not have to deviate my posture.
  • Being easily adjustable without causing excessive noise or struggling to raise or lower the height due to the weight.
  • Being reasonably affordable.
  • Having a good warranty.
  • Having good reviews on the product.

Based on reviewing the product spec along with a range of reviews on the product, it’s apparent why this Ergotron WorkFit-S single LD sit-stand workstation is a top-selling product. I’m satisfied that the unit has met my standards.

The size and stability of the keyboard may be of concern to users, particularly those who are aggressive typists. Fortunately, there’s an upgraded keyboard to overcome that potential issue.

Besides that, there’s not much else you could fault.
