The average length of a running belt is 55.29 inches. Running treadmill belts range from 37.87 – 78 inches in length which means that there should be a desk treadmill available to suit practically all heights and stride lengths.

Taller people and people that intend to use the treadmill for running fast tend to have larger strides. Consequently, the length of the running belt will need to be longer to comfortably accommodate your stride.

If you are extremely clued in or you’re willing to measure your stride length, you can more accurately determine how long at running belt needs to be to accommodate you.

Most people don’t know what their average stride length is, so if you are around 5’10” or more in height or you intend to run fast on the treadmill desk, opt for a running belt that is longer than 60 inches.

But bear in mind that you probably won’t be able to run very fast as most under desk treadmills don’t go much faster than 8 mph.

Long story short, if you have the space for a longer walking treadmill and can afford it, you’re better off buying a desk treadmill with a longer belt.

However, any of these treadmills would be a good choice for people looking for a long running belt.

Does the size of a treadmill desk matter?

The dimensions of a desk treadmill will be important considerations, especially in determining:

A larger treadmill desk is more advantageous:

  • If you have ample space for an under treadmill desk
  • If you are greater than 5’10” in height
  • If you have a longer stride or intend to run on the under desk treadmill
  • If multiple users of varying heights plan to use the under desk treadmill
  • If you feel more comfortable on a wider or longer running belt
  • Amount of space required in your room to fit the treadmill desk
  • Amount of space available for walking or running
  • If the treadmill desk is suitable for your desk height
  • The stability of the desk treadmill

A compact treadmill desk is more advantageous:

  • If you have limited clearance to fit a treadmill at your standing desk
  • If storage space is at a premium
  • If the treadmill desk needs to be portable
  • To minimize the overall weight of the treadmill desk
  • To reduce the cost of the treadmill desk – smaller treadmills tend to cost less
  • To minimize shipping costs of the treadmill desk

Does height range of the standing desk matter?

The height range of the standing desk and the height of the under desk treadmill are 2 important factors to consider, particularly for taller users or if you are purchasing a standing desk and under desk treadmill separately.

If you are a taller user over 5’9” or someone who is working from a standing desk that is at the highest height level or very close to the highest setting, you’ll need to closely consider the height of the under desk treadmill.

Under desk treadmills range from 3 – 9.5 inches in height. Therefore, when you stand on the treadmill, you will be at a taller level.

Consequently, you will probably need to increase the height of the standing desk by the same height as the treadmill to be ergonomically positioned at your sit-stand desk.

This can pose an issue if the type of standing desk you own has a low range of height, or you are using it at the highest level already.

In such scenarios, a treadmill with a low height will be the best option.

If you already own a height-adjustable desk and want to introduce a walking desk underneath, below are some important steps that you can follow to determine if the setup will work:

Find out what height you’re currently using the standing desk at and how many more inches the standing desk can be raised.

Find an under desk treadmill with a height no larger than the height range you have left on your standing desk.

Let’s take an example. Say the standing desk has a height range of 47” and I’m using it at 42”, that indicates that I can increase the height by 5 inches. I then need to source a treadmill with a height no greater than 5” (and even less if I can).

I’ll also need to ensure that the width of the treadmill offers at least 1 inch of clearance on either side to slot comfortably under my existing standing desk.

Furthermore, belt length will also be a consideration.

This scenario is taking for granted that you have the standing desk and office set at an ergonomic height and it’s not too low or too high for your posture.

Alternatively, you could opt for a treadmill desk workstation and the manufacturer can determine if the setup will suit your height.

Can I increase the height range of my standing desk?

If the height range of your standing desk isn’t adequate to accommodate you at an under desk treadmill, there are some innovative and creative ways that you can increase the height of a standing desk.

The first option is to check for frame height upgrades with the manufacturer
to see if they can change out the desk legs for a frame with a greater height range. The Uplift V2 standing desk and the Varidesk electric standing desk are examples which can achieve this.

There are also some DIY methods that can be employed.

You could raise the height of your monitors and opt for a keyboard attachment which would enable you to use the sit-stand desk but positioning your equipment at a taller height.

Although they may not be the prettiest or safest option, I have seen a video where someone put their standing desk up on wooden stilts.

Personally, I wouldn’t be a fan of this option as I could see instability being an issue, but I just found it interesting to see what people come up with! Would you be a fan of this?

What length running belt do I need?

The requirements for belt lengths and widths differ between walkers, runners and taller users. The length and width of the running belt will significantly influence how comfortable you feel while walking or running on the desk treadmill.

The below table highlights the recommended belt length and belt width that best suit walkers, taller users and runners.

If treadmill desk size isn’t a primary concern for you, then the price of treadmill desks will almost certainly be a factor. Nobody wants to be ripped off after all!

Generally, the factors that affect most people when successfully choosing the ultimate treadmill desk include the:

  1. Cost
  2. Intended purpose
  3. Size
  4. Speed
  5. Storage
  6. If you can run on the treadmill desk

That said, the other factors provided above are also of paramount concern in choosing a suitable treadmill that won’t leave you suffering and in discomfort.

Remember, if after the research phase or after trialing out a treadmill desk, you find the change daunting or don’t like the idea of a treadmill desk, there are alternatives to enable an active workspace. I’ll list my favorite active workstations at the end of this post.

So now you have some options for not only standing but also walking at your desk, you’ll also need periods where you rest your legs by sitting down.

If I didn’t already own a chair and I was in the process of buying one, I’d be recommending this reliable multi-functional office chairs. Not least because it comes with a lifetime guarantee!

Thankfully nowadays, there is much more adjustability being built into chairs and they are much better at accommodating our heights and posture. Plus, they are designed for all-day use.

Tip: You should allow approximately 8 inches of clearance behind the under desk treadmill and 3 inches of clearance either side of the treadmill desk.

Conclusion

This article truly highlights just how much difference there is in the dimensions between different treadmill desks. It also emphasizes the difference in area consumption based on the treadmill desk.

We now know after reading this article that under treadmill desks can vary as much as a whopping 138.82% in footprint consumption.

Not only do you need to consider the space available in the room that the treadmill will be in, you also need to ensure there’s adequate space for the treadmill to fit under the standing desk.

Finally, you need to ensure there’s sufficient space on the running belt to accommodate your stride while also feeling comfortable and not cramped.

If you are tight on space or want a light and easy to carry treadmill, then paying attention to the treadmill desk dimensions should be a key deciding factor for you.

If space allows, then you can choose literally any size treadmill desk that you like. However, for compact homes or office with limited storage, compact under treadmill desks are certainly the best option.

Either way, there’s no harm trying one out in a store or buying one online, provided it has a good return policy (and most businesses do give at least 30 days to return!).
